My Work IS My Identity!

I don't know what my purpose will be once I retire! I have been ____________ for my whole adult career and everyone knows me as_________________!
Maybe it's not you who says this but a treasured family member or dear friend. This happens not just at retirement, but at other transitions in our lives, think empty nest, moving to a new community, widowhood. We tend to define ourselves by what the world sees and knows in our earlier roles.
What we CAN do in response to this transition is to embrace the PIVOTS. Maintain your flexibility as you approach retirement. Look how far you have come! Adaptability is a muscle that you can flex!
You can shed habits that don't help you. In fact, clinging to something that no longer serves us can be detrimental!

My doctor who treated me for a sports injury told me I'd need to adapt my running style. I needed to make a shift if I wanted to avoid injury. Using techniques espoused by Danny Dreyer, author of Chi Running, I have adapted successfully! By releasing myself from methods that were not helpful, I am able to keep active and enjoy my sport and stay active!
