Quieting the Commercial Buzz

Back in March I talked about the importance of establishing boundaries with loved ones around your time and space. One of my friends now keeps her kitchen door locked when she is home to reduce stray visitors from waltzing in, derailing her working at home!

Today let’s shift to commercial intrusion – influencers in the form of celebrities, fashion and pharmaceuticals – don’t get me started – among many! Today’s focus is aimed at quieting consumer buzzing that you may find yourself flooded with like product promotions for hearing aids, stairlifts and panic buttons and all kinds of consumable items peddled by influencers via email flooding your inbox or nefarious text messages pinging relentlessly urging immediate action, so you won’t miss out! We’ve established your time is valuable, so let’s take a few active steps to reduce the flow, no, BARRAGE of promotions!

Ashlee Piper, author of No New Things, advises us to unsubscribe to unwanted emails. You can do this by clicking the link at the bottom of your email. Tedious yes, but worth your effort for uninterrupted peace of mind, once you regain control! She reminds us that people of a certain age are also targets for postal solicitations. She recommends following the FTC’s guidance to remove your information from mailing lists. And while we're at it, renew your status on the DO NOT CALL list!

As retirees, we want to attend to things that matter to us and are worthy of our valuable time. Ashlee Piper suggests that we curate our social media, scrutinize the platforms and feeds and eliminate, un-follow or mute those that do not serve us.
